A week had passed since the accident that put Lex into a coma, and he was still in the same place. Dr. Klein told both Clark and his parents that his condition was just as it was before and it was strange that there was no change in his state. Even the hospital's top neurologist, Dr. Ostermann, couldn't understand why Lex was still out cold. He told Dr. Klein to double the dosage he was getting to see if that would change the size of the contusion on the back of his head, which he did immediately. While Lex continued to slumber at the hospital, Clark's equilibrium was up and down, while he stayed at the farmhouse. That morning, he prayed to the porcelain god like it was going out of style. Walking slowly down the staircase, Clark bypassed the food on the kitchen table and went straight for the refrigerator.
"Morning, Clark," Martha started. "Are you feeling any better?"
"No..." He replied as he grabbed the juice carton and closed the door behind him. "I feel like I'm on a rollercoaster."
"Maybe you should try eating something; it would make you feel better."
"No thanks, Mom; I don't need anything I can throw up later. I'll just have some orange juice."
"You know, son, you should listen to your mom about things like that. She might just be able to help you out." Jonathan added.
"Look, I know you both are trying to help, but I need to handle this for myself."
"Alright, son; whatever you do, don't go back to see Jor-El."
"Don't worry, Dad; I won't go to see him."
Seeing Jor-El at that moment wasn't a bad idea and getting his help would make a ton of things easier, but Clark knew that if he went to his other father for help again, Jonathan would surely blow his top. He decided to wait everything out and make sure that he didn't really need Jor-El's mystical assistance.
After stopping off at the hospital to see Lex still in his comatose state and giving him a soft kiss on his hairless head, Clark headed to class like he usually did during the week. As soon as the school day ended for him, he made his way back into town and to the Talon, where he found one of his dearest friends and his mother in deep conversation.
"Hey, you two," Clark stated. "Talking about me again?"
"No way, Clark," Lois retorted, turning the best she could on her stool. "We were talking about the baby shower Lana, Chloe, and your mom here, want to throw for me."
"A baby shower, Mom? Wow, that's a great idea."
"Yeah, Clark, I figured she could use one, and her fiancee's going to come to town, so I figured we all could meet him finally." Martha answered.
"That's great, you guys. Any help you both need, let me know, okay?"
"We might just need help with the set-up here," Lois started back up. "You know, moving tables and chairs, that kind of stuff."
"Ummm, Lois... how 'bout I have Jonathan do that sort of stuff?" Mrs. Kent wondered.
"Yeah, maybe that would be better, Martha. Good thinkin'."
As Martha went back to work, Lois pulled Clark to a side table and began to talk with him some more.
"Look, Clark, I heard about Lex," she said to him lightly. "I'm so sorry about what happened. Your mom explained everything to me."
"'Everything'?" He inquired, wanting to know what Martha told her.
"Yeah, she explained the accident, the extent of his injury and how you've been taking all of this. She said it hasn't been easy for you."
"Lois, I'm taking it as well as anyone else, I guess."
"You guess, Clark? Wow, you are a stone-faced liar, you know that? I would have been upset beyond belief, if my fiancee was in Lex's situation."
"I was upset, Lois, when I first saw him. But, it's been almost a week now and things haven't changed."
"If it's only been a week, you gotta believe that he'll wake up soon."
"I believe in a lot of things, Lois, and I'm always wishing that he'll wake up, but since nothing has changed, I've kinda given up."
"Don't give up, Clark. He'll wake up soon, I promise you."
"I hope you're right."
"I know I'm right. At least, I hope I know I am."
The drive back to the farm was its usual smooth-to-bumpy self. Clark pulled his bright blue 4x4 up the house, ready to resume his daily chores. Traveling into the residence, he set his book bag on the dining room table and then, traveled upstairs to get on some work clothes. Jonathan had told him previously to slow down, when working, for the safely of himself and the baby, but he took the statement with a grain of salt. He removed his red and blue-checkered polo shirt, designer blue jeans and dress boots, and replaced them with an old pair of carpenter jeans and a long-sleeved red tee shirt with smudges of paint on it. He moved downstairs and put on his work shoes swiftly. When he got back up on his feet, a high-pitched shrieking noise entered his head. It was the octagonal disc; it was calling to him. He traveled outside to the barn, where he knew his father had hid the item. Jonathan, who was riding up the road in his bright red truck, noticed Clark heading into the shelter. He figured that Clark was going up to his 'fortress' to study, so after he parked his automobile, he strolled in to say 'hello'. Instead, he saw his son, holding his head and making his way over to the disc's hiding place.
"Clark, what's going on?" Jonathan questioned loudly.
"The disc..." He stammered. "It's calling...to me!"
"What? Why?"
"I dunno, Dad. It just started."
"Did you go and see Jor-El after I told you not to?"
"No...God, Dad, where is it?"
Jonathan raced over to the tool chest and fished through all five drawers, until he found what he was looking for, handing it quickly to Clark. As soon as the silver shape touched his son's hand, the noise ended and a voice swiftly entered Clark's head.
"Kal-El, hear me..." he spoke gallantly. "It is time to awaken those who are at rest."
"What? What do you mean 'those who are at rest'?" Clark wondered out loud.
"Come to me and I will show you."
"No!"
"Come to me, or I will take you!"
When the voice ended, it left both men wondering what to do next.
"Dad, Jor-El wants me to come to him," Clark retorted. "But, you told me I shouldn't. What should I do?"
"Clark, we need to get down to the bottom of all of this, and if we have to get Jor-El involved, so be it. Let's head to the cave."
"Maybe I should go alone, Dad."
"Clark, I'm not leaving you alone with him again; I'm coming with, whether he likes it or not."
Making it to the cave, Clark placed the octagonal disc in its slot and put his hand on his dad's shoulder, just as the white light shot up around them, sending the two men swiftly to their destination. When the pale beam ended, Clark and Jonathan landed in front of Jor-El's altar.
"Kal-El, my son," the being started. "It is time to awaken those who are at rest."
"Jor-El, I don't understand you." Clark answered.
"You will soon find out."
With that, a flash of light streaked rapidly through Jonathan and Clark, knocking them to their knees. The strobe quickly moved throughout Smallville, pushing everyone down, before making its way to the medical center. The illumination went through everyone's bodies, awaking those who were critically injured and comatose. (One of those just happened to be Lex). His heart began to race, and without warning, he started to gasp for air, making the machine alarms go off. Two nurses raced into his room, resetting the equipment, only to notice that Lex's eyes were open wide and he was looking around the room. One nurse ran to get Dr. Klein, as the other monitored his condition and reaction to being confined to a bed.
"What am I doing here?" He questioned breathlessly. "How did I get here?"
"Mr. Luthor, you're at Smallville Medical Center," she spoke up cautiously. "Dr. Klein is on his way; he'll explain it all to you in more detail."
"Dr. Klein? Who is Dr. Klein?"
"I'm Dr. Kenneth Klein, Mr. Luthor." The young physician responded. "Do you remember what happened to you?"
"No, I don't remember much. I was at the farm with my husband, he left the house, and when I went to leave, everything went black."
"You don't remember anything after that?"
"No, nothing...what happened to me? What's wrong with me?"
"Mr. Luthor, you had a severe concussion, which kept you in a vegetative state for a week. We couldn't wake you up and you weren't able to do that yourself. I guess the medicine we've been giving you for your skull fracture worked as we hoped it would."
"Yeah, I guess so. Doctor, where's Clark? I need to see him."
"Mr. Luthor..."
"Lex, call me Lex."
"Alright, Lex...I'll phone your husband and get him over here as soon as possible. Right now, you just need to relax."
"I'll try, Doc."
Dr. Klein strolled out of the room and down to the nurses' station, finding the use of a phone there. He dialed the Kent Farm, hoping that Clark would be there, ready for the good news.
Meanwhile, back at the Fortress, Clark and Jonathan got out off their 'white-light' funk and moved back to their feet. Stretching and feeling certain body parts pop, the two men both felt better.
"Clark, are you alright?" Jonathan wondered.
"Yeah, we're fine, I think." His son responded, placing his hand on his stomach.
"Good, we don't need you losing that baby."
Taking a deep breath, Jonathan moved back to the altar and questioned, "What was that, Jor-El?"
"That was the Awakening," the being responded. "I have awakened your mate, Kal-El; he is now alive and well."
"Why did you do that, Jor-El? I don't understand."
"Jonathan Kent, I caused him to be in his slumber. I decided to awaken him for Kal-El's sake. I have also discovered that one of your world's medicinal experts has all of the knowledge of the Kryptonian world."
"Who is it? Which doctor?" Clark inquired.
"You shall see, Kal-El."
"No, I need to know exactly who it is."
"It is the man attending to your life mate."
"Dr. Klein? Why did you choose him?"
"I did not choose him, Kal-El. He was born with this knowledge. He is one of us."
Four hours went by, before Clark and Jonathan came back to Smallville. When they arrived back to Earth, Martha was waiting there for them.
"Mom, what are you doing here?" Clark wondered softly.
"Dr. Klein called. Lex is awake." She spoke up.
"I gotta get over there."
"Clark, be careful." Jonathan stated to his son.
"Dad, I will be. Hide the disc again, alright?"
"I will, son. We'll be up at the hospital as soon as we can."
"Okay, I'll see you when you get there."
With that, Clark sped away, running quickly to the medical center to see his husband and tell him about their 'miracle'. Making it up to his husband's room promptly, he saw Lex, lying in bed, watching television. Clark stood in the doorway, leaning on the doorframe quietly. Lex didn't even have to turn, seeing someone in periphery of his eyes.
"You look tired." Clark stated softly.
"Spoke for yourself." Lex responded. "Where-in-the-hell were you?"
"I was talking to Jor-El; he awakened you."
"He what?"
"He sent this beam of light throughout Smallville, and somehow it awakened everyone who was, in his words, at rest. You were one of those people."
"I guess I should be thankful."
"I know I am. You've missed a lot in a week."
"Like what?"
"Well, Lois is having her baby shower at the Talon, thanks to Mom, Lana and Chloe. They are inviting Lois's fiancee to the thing as well."
"Good, then we'll finally get to meet him. Anything else?"
"Yes, there is one more thing. Do you remember the day that this all started?"
"Yeah, vaguely. Why?"
"Lex, that day, Jor-El told me something that will change our lives forever."
"What did he say?"
"He told me that we're going to have..."
Suddenly, a pain rose in his chest as if it were on fire. His body tightened and his lungs started to close up on him. Taking as many breaths as he could, he felt lightheaded, and then, the room began to spin as he heard Lex say his name over and over, before he hit the floor hard and the room went dark.
