Title: Only I'll Remember
Pairing: Clark/Lex
Category: Future!Fic/ Angst
Rating: T
Summary: Conner finds something in Clark's room and when he asks about it, he finds out something no one bothered to tell him. His parents were once in love. Conner, feeling the need for some normality in his life, goes back in the past to see something he'd never see in his lifetime-his parents happy and in love.
(A/N: There's this episode in Angel the Series called `I will remember you' and sniff it made me cry and I don't even like Buffy/Angel as a pairing. Anyways, this isn't a crossover, but I simply got inspired by that episode to write this little fic.)
Conner walked into the main gathering room, "Dad," he called out. His Dad and Bruce were watching the local news station with their usual grimaces firmly in place.
"Hmm?" Clark said absently as he watched last night's top story. It seemed the city was upset with the destruction Superman made while fighting the latest villain of the week.
"Where'd you get this?" Conner asked holding out the box in his hand.
Clark turned around quickly to tell Conner he was to busy to talk, when he saw what was in his boy's hands.
"C-Conner, what were you doing in my room?" He asked as he looked at the box with trepidation.
Bruce stilled at the odd tone in Clark's voice and turned away from the main monitor. He looked at the box and then gave Clark a murderous glare, "I though you said you got rid of all that stuff." He hissed.
Clark quickly grabbed the lead box out of Conner's hand and placed it to his chest, "I did, I just kept this one thing," Clark said looking into Bruce's eyes, pleading, hoping he'd understand.
Bruce huffed and looked back at the monitors, "Do what you want, Clark, just don't expect me to be happy about it!" he said picking up his utility belt and swooping out of the room before Clark could say anything.
Clark watched him leave with sad eyes and then turned to his son, "Conner, I asked you a question. What were you doing in my room?"
Conner, who had watched the argument between the two men, was now staring at the box with complete fascination, "I was looking for that spare costume you have, I was going to play a joke on Tim and well..."he trailed off and pointed to the box, "Dad, why's Bruce all pissy about a small lead box?"
Clark sighed, "your father gave it to me," he whispered.
Conner's eyes bugled out of his sockets, "When the hell did you two have the kind of relationship, where he was giving you gifts?"
Clark shook his head and began to walk out of the main room, Conner right on his tail, "come on, Dad, you can't tell me something like that, and not give me any information."
Clark walked into his room and placed the box on his dresser. He turned and looked at Conner, his eyes filled with regret and more sadness than Conner had ever seen on another being, "Me and your father were--best friends at one time."
Conner felt his world spin at those words, "What and you're just telling me this now?!"
Clark wrapped his arms across his chest, "I didn't see any need for you to know."
"What?! You thought I didn't need to know my parents were close at one time?"
Clark grabbed his red cape off the bed and turned to his son as he put it on, "Conner, just leave it alone, it was along time ago." And with that he was gone.
Conner stared at the empty spot where his dad had just been and after a moment grinded his teeth. No way was he leaving it, at that.
He grabbed the lead box off the dresser; he had an evil billionaire to talk to.
Lex looked up in shock as he son walked in and slammed something on his desk, "I want to know everything," Conner growled.
Lex looked down and was stunned to his mother's old lead box staring back at him. A lead box he hadn't seen in fifteen years.
"Conner, where did you get this?" he asked as he picked up the box with reverence.
Conner sighed with exasperation, "Father, you know exactly where I got it--I want to know why you never told me you and Dad were friends."
"Friends?" Lex whispered as he slowly opened the box, "did your Dad tell you we were friends?"
Conner rolled his eyes, "Yeah, he did. So, what's the what, Father? I want to know what happened."
Lex closed the empty lead box and looked up at his son, "We were more than friends, Conner, I-I once loved your Dad very much."
Conner felt like he had just been smacked with a moving train, "What?!"
"A long time ago, your Dad and I--loved each other," Lex laughed, a deep. dark laugh; "I once told him we were the stuff of legends."
Conner flopped into the leather chair behind him, "holy shit," he muttered, "what happened?"
Lex closed his eyes and leaned back in his chair, "Clark never trusted me and I became the one person he always hated."
Conner watched his powerful father's face fall, the sadness and regret as clear on his face as it had been on his Dad's, "You still love him--don't you, Father?"
Lex opened his eyes but kept his head heaven bound, "Conner, love that that never dies"
For the next month Conner spent all his time at the fortress of solitude, he researched everything he could about his parents and found out more than he expected to.
There were stories in the Daily Planet of Luthor and his young handsome boyfriend. Some of them saying things like--"It looks like the 'Luthor Heir' is permanently off the market."
It was clear in the pictures that they were desperately in love.
And then there was the interview that Lois Lane did with Superman, and after that not a single word of Luthor. AI told him that Kal-El spent a lot of time in the Fortress during that time
AI had told Conner that it had recorded every conversation held within its walls. Conner asked to listen to the first recording after the date of the first Superman interview. He had been heartbroken to hear recording after recording of his Dad crying.
"No more," Conner said with a wave of his hand, his own face covered in tears.
"I have ones with Lex-Luthor, Kon-El" AI said after a moment.
Conner grinded his teeth, "dammit, AI, why didn't you tell me before? Put it on, now."
Conner listened with tears slowly filling his eyes again.
"Please, I'm sorry, I should have told you, Lex."
"You know, if you would have told me-You. Clark. Not seeing your fucking face in the Daily Plant, proclaiming to the goddamn world that you were a fucking alien, then I would have forgiven you-But hell, you told everyone but me! And you had the audacity to think I wouldn't know you were fucking Superman"
"I didn't know how to tell-I got scared, Lex-I didn't-I didn't know how you would take it-I'm sorry!"
Conner waited with baited breath, even though he knew Lex never forgive him, a part of Conner was hoping he'd hear his Father say his Dad was forgiven.
"All I want, Superman, is for you to take me back, I don't want to be here, I never did--just take me back, NOW!"
"Oh god, Lex, Please, I'm so..."
"Turn it off!" Conner snapped, not being able to bear anymore. His face was a washed with tears and he placed his hands over his eyes as his shoulders shook from the force of his sobs.
"You have to stop this," he heard someone say behind him.
Conner looked up to see Tim standing next to him, "I thought you were sleeping?"
"I heard the audio from your room, Kon," Tim said as he kneeled next to his boyfriend, "and you have to stop this. We've been coming here for weeks and it's doing nothing but breaking your heart."
"They loved each other, Tim," he said pointing to the AI, "you heard it--This isn't the way things should be," he hissed as he clicked on the monitor and a video feed, AI had of LexCorp, showed Superman and Luthor screaming at each other.
"They should be together, not enemies!"
Tim nodded his head, "maybe-but this is the way it is, my love, there's nothing you can do."
"If Kon-El wishes, he may go back in time and see them for himself," AI said.
Conner's eyes lit up, "and changes things, AI?"
"No, the past can not be changed, Kon-El, but you can go back to further your research."
"No way, Kon, don't," Tim said narrowing his eyes at the fucking AI
"What do you mean I can't change things?" Kon asked ignoring his boyfriend's words.
"The past has already been written, Kon-El, But you can go back and research it. You will have two hours, earth time, to do your research. When you leave, time will fold back and it will be like you were never there."
Conner nodded his head, "so I can talk to them, see them, but I can't change anything."
"That is correct, Kon-El."
"Kon, baby, don't do this, seeing them like that will only hurt you more," Tim said as he touched Kon's cheek.
Conner looked away, "I have to, Tim. I need to see this."
Conner walked out of the alleyway as his eyes adjusting to the bright sun. He looked around the small town stores until they hit the one place, he knew from his research that he would find them.
He quickly checked over his clothes, making sure they looked okay, old flannel pants with a well worn pair of jeans. A perfect look for any Smallville kid. Well, expect the small device that looked like a cell phone, clipped onto his belt.
AI had told him that he had to keep the small device on his belt buckle or he would return before his two hours were up.
He walked over to `The Talon' and could feel his palms began to sweat. God dammit, he was so nervous, but he couldn't turn back, he needed to see this.
Conner may not be like any other person in the world, but he still craved what other teenagers did. He wanted to see his parents happy. He was desperately seeking some type of normality in his messed up life.
When he walked in, he saw them instantly, but nothing prepared him for what he saw.
His father had his head thrown back, laughing as his Dad sat across from him, chuckling softly but mostly staring at his father like the sun rose strictly for him.
The sight made Conner freeze, he's eyes began to water and he held his hand over his mouth to stop from sobbing to loud.
Jesus, he couldn't believe it--look at them, his father looked so fucking happy and his Dad, oh god- his Dad looked like he didn't have the weight of the world on his shoulders.
He didn't realize how loud he had been crying until both of his parents froze and turned to look at him--he had gotten a little to close, as well.
"You okay," His Dad asked looking up at him with concern. He didn't say anything and he knew he was acting like the biggest freak, but hell--
His parents always had youthful appearances but--they looked so young, like Tim and him--actually that's who they reminded him of-Tim and him.
God, they had been happy, his parents had once been happy!
Lex looked at Clark, as the young boy stared at them with wide, watery eyes. They both shrugged, but Lex could tell the boy was creeping the hell out of Clark.
"Kid, you okay," Lex asked as if he were talking to someone very close to a nervous break down, in fact, Lex was pretty sure that's exactly what was going on.
When the boy looked into his eyes Lex instantly felt like someone had just walked over his grave-Fuck-The boy had eyes exactly like his mother's.
Oh dear god, Lex though as he looked at him more closely, `please tell me, there's not another one of us walking around. Lucas was enough trouble at it was.'
As Lex looked closer, he noticed that he didn't just look like him, but the kid also reminded him a lot of--He turned and looked at Clark who was staring at the boy with the same expression of shock.
Who the hell was this boy?!
"Who are you?" Clark asked reading Lex's mind, "There's--I can feel something about you..." Clark trailed off and looked at Lex with fear.
"Let's get him out of here, now!" he said with a freaked out tone.
They walked to a car and drove in silence back to the castle. Conner staring in shock at his parents and the both of them stealing glances at him with equal alarm.
As soon as Conner got out of the car, his Dad dragged him into a beautiful room with a pool table and a fireplace. His father still had the same taste, 15 years in the future and the surrounds made him feel a bit more comfortable.
"So, tell us who you are?" His father asked, never one to beat around the bush.
Conner sighed. feeling calmer then he had since he first saw them, "It wouldn't really matter what I tell you, you'll forget all about this once I go. It'll be like I was never here."
Clark's eyes narrowed, "I can feel what you are?"
"What the hell are you talking about, Clark? Lex asked with a frrowed brow, "You already said that before. What do you mean, feel it?"
Clark looked nervous for a moment, "I-I just meant he gives me the creeps."
Lex shook his head, "You said, you could feel what he was--not who. What the hell is this? This boy looks like us, you realize that, right?"
Conner watched then argue and shook his head, he didn't want to see this, he came to see them happy, "Look, I don't want to see you two fight, please don't," he begged, "can you just go back to laughing and stuff," he pleaded.
Clark and Lex looked at each other, "who the hell are you?" they both asked at the same time.
Conner grinded his teeth together, "Fine, I'm your guys son--you two hate each other in the future--no, that's not true, you two love each, but you hate each other and fight all the time--your enemies," he eyes began to water again as he babbled, "I-I just wanted to see you two happy, so please don't fight, okay?"
Clark began to shake, "what do you mean, we're enemies?"
Conner snapped his eyes to his Dad's, all his anger building up as he stared at him. He felt his inner `five year old' self snap, and he wanted to stomp his foot and scream, `This is all your fault!'
"You know, Dad, if you had just been honest with Father, just once! Why the hell did you have to lie to him all the time?!" he snapped, he knew there wasn't going to be anymore happy scenes today.
Clark clenched his fist and narrowed his eyes, "I don't know what you're talking about."
Conner growled and stood up, "Ohh, that's what you always say, but you're not Superman yet, Dad! So, don't act like that with me!"
Lex raised a brow, "Superman?"
Conner sighed, "it's what the world calls Dad."
"What?! Why would they call them that and--how in the hell are you our son--we're both male," Lex mind was running a mile a minute and Conner knew how much the unknown pissed his Father off.
"Father," Conner said softly, "Clark's an alien."
Clark gasped and looked like he wanted to punch Conner, or flee the room, "You," he snapped, "why-how?"
"Oh for god sakes Dad, just calm down," Conner hissed and rolled his eyes at the same time-a move all teenagers mastered by the age 13," Jesus, everyone knows you're an alien in the future--well, they don't know, that by day you're the mild manner Clark Kent, but they know that Superman is an alien."
"Everyone knows," Clark whispered in shock, "but--did I get experimented on?"
Conner furrowed his brow and then burst out laughing as he tried to picture anyone having the gall to try and experiment on Superman--The Justice League, hell, the world would be in an uproar, "Why would you think that-Dad? You're the world's hero-hell, people love you!"
Clark took a step back and shook his head, "no, that--but I'm an alien," he whispered, saying it as if he were diseased.
"Yeah, "Conner shrugged, "And I'm half alien, and Father's a healing mutant that can somehow survive anything, and your boyfriend is a man that wears a bat suit and beats up criminals for fun," Conner said then shrugged again, "We're all weird."
Lex glared at Clark, "You're dating a man that wears a bat suit."
Conner chuckled, out of all the things his father would be upset about.
Clark stared at his boyfriend in disgust, "I would never date a guy that wears a bat suit!"
Conner chuckled, "I'm sure Bruce would be pissed to hear that."
"Bruce?" Lex hissed.
Conner nodded, "yeah, he's dating Bruce Wayne."
"Wayne, you're dating that fucking asshole Bruce Wayne!" Lex yelled at Clark
Clark narrowed his eyes, "Lex, goddamn it! I'm dating you!"
Lex turned on his heels and stalked over to the bar, "so, Kid, I'm suppose to believe that I'm dating an alien Superhero, we some how had a son, and I get dumped for that asshole Bruce Wayne, who somehow lost his mind and started to wear bat suits on his days off."
Conner nodded his head, "umm, yeah, expect--you broke it off with Clark."
Lex poured him self a drink and shook his head, "impossible, I'd never break up with Clark."
Conner sighed, "Yeah, because you two will always be the stuff of legends, right?"
Lex was mid-sip when he stilled and looked at Conner with shocked eyes. It seemed that was the magic words to get Lex to believe him.
"Tell me what happened?" Lex whispered
"You told me, Dad never trusted you and you became the one person he had always hated."
Lex and Clark froze and turned to each other, "Clark?" Lex whispered, his voice lost and scared.
Clark shook his head, "never going to happen, you'll never become him."
Conner sighed, "Lex Luthor is one of the most notorious Supervillans in the world, he has tried to kill Superman many, many times."
Lex's drink slipped out of his hands and his weak knees caused him to fall.
Clark looked at Conner pleadingly, "How do I stop this?" he demanded.
"If you had trusted him," Conner said as he looked away. The sun was making the light from the stain glass windows look-pretty, "you never told him, he found out because you did an interview with the Daily Planet. You told the world before you told Father."
Clark looked at Lex, "Oh god, Lex, I should have told you from the beginning. I was just scared you'd find me disgusting after I told you."
Lex looked up with narrowed eyes, "Do you have so little fucking faith in my love for you, Clark--Shit, I've done nothing but show you how much I love you."
Clark ran over and wrapping Lex into his arms, "I'm so sorry, please forgive me Lex, I should have told you. I promise to never, ever lie to you again. Please, don't hate me."
Lex touched his cheek. He didn't know what to think, his Clark had lied to him, his Clark was an alien--but how could he walk away. He and Clark have only been together six months--they had all the time in the world to make this up. "How could I hate you, Clark," Lex whispered and kissed him softly, "just--just promise me to never lie again."
Clark nodded frantically, as Conner stared at them in horror, What The Fuck
Father was forgiving him! They were--NO! Oh god- NO!
"Dad, Father," he said, his eyes filling with tears again, "I already told you--I-I can't change the past, no one can--when I-I go--it will be back to how it was-The moment I'm gone, it will be like you never left The Talon."
Lex got up slowly and took a step towards him, "What the fuck do you mean?!"
Conner sobbed, "I-I told you, I-I've never seen you two like this, every time you two are together, its death threats and glares... I-I just wanted to see you two happy."
Lex grinded his teeth, "I'll remember," he hissed looking deeply into Clark's eyes, "I promise you, Clark, I'll never forget this"
Conner shook his head sadly as the two boys held each other in desperation, "no, Father, only I will," He whispered as he disappeared.
Tim was there when he opened his eyes, "so," he whispered, "how'd it go?"
Conner fell to his knees, "Oh god, Tim, you were right--I should've never gone."
Tim wrapped his arms around him and held his love tight, "shh, my love, I'm here, I've got you."
